EcoAgriculture Partners is proud to be a partner of the Equator Initiative. This Initiative of the UN Development Programme brings together the United Nations, governments, civil society, businesses and grassroots organizations to recognize and advance local, sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities.
Once every two years, they organize the Equator Prize, which honors ten outstanding Indigenous and local groups from across the world who are achieving these goals.
The ten winners of the Equator Prize 2020 are community groups and networks from Canada, Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mexico, and Thailand. Many are multi-stakeholder landscape partnerships. All are using innovative, nature-based solutions for tackling biodiversity, climate change, and poverty challenges. Their experiences provide blueprints for addressing the socio-economic crisis caused by COVID-19 at the local level with green approaches.
Introduced by distinguished artists and leaders from their countries, the Prize winners received their awards during the Equator Prize Award Ceremony that took place virtually on 29 September 2020, as part of the “Nature for Life Hub” during Sept 24-25 and 28-29th.
EcoAgriculture Partners has partnered with the Equator Initiative since 2005, supporting their growing focus on community-led landscape management to achieve goals of biodiversity, climate and community. EcoAgriculture also helps to mobilize and review nominations. Our President, Sara Scherr, participated in a brief video created by the Initiative’s partners to congratulate this year’s Prize winners:
