Summary

Local government advocacy for agricultural carbon programs in Uganda

Promoting agricultural carbon activities has multiple benefits for farmers, ecosystems, and the global climate. But what can local governments do to help? This brief presents recommended policy priorities for the Ugandan context that address this issue.

Specifically, district local governments should:

  1. Increase direct support to the ECOTRUST project to allow it to scale up.
  2. Integrate existing agricultural carbon activities into Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs).
  3. Integrate existing agricultural carbon activities into a national or sub-national REDD+ program.
  4. Implement complementary actions that link carbon finance to broader integrated landscape management programs.
