Short Summary

Landscape Finance is a key enabler to supporting ILM and local partnerships in developing the scale and impacts needed to support implementing the UN-Sustainable Development Goals. However, systemic action is needed to address the key barriers and opportunities in the sector.

This presentation, by Sara Scherr of EcoAgriculture Partners, presented an overview of the 1000L initiative and its finance agenda, stressing the importance of working in coalition across the spectrum of public, private and civic partnerships to support local multi-stakeholder landscape partnerships. A central aspect of the need for 1000L is the systemic barriers that face local partnerships, especially in terms of finance and information access. While over 420 local partnerships have already been documented across the world, most still struggle to achieve their ambitious objectives of landscape regeneration. Thus the 1000 Landscapes for 1 Billion People initiative (1000L) was formed as a radical collaboration to reach transformative change.

The presentation gives a brief overview of the initiative’s work encompassing the following four pillars:

  • Terraso Digital Landscape Platform
  • ILM Capacity Development
  • Landscape Finance Solutions
  • 1000L Global Action Network

The 1000L initiative Finance Task Force co-organized the workshop conducted on November 5th, 2020, which was meant to build an understanding of opportunities and challenges for landscape finance, generate feedback on the 1000L initiative and investigate the interest and needs of financial institutions related to landscape finance.
