Stories we loved the week of May 23rd:

UN report says environmental degradation leading cause of death worldwide – IISD

Environmental degradation and pollution cause almost a quarter of all deaths, up to 234 times as many premature deaths as occur in conflicts annually and the deaths of more than 25% of all children under the age of five. The report goes on to illustrate how investing in a healthy environment can bring multiple benefits. For example, by phasing out nearly 100 ozone-depleting substances (ODS) up to two million cases of skin cancer and millions of eye cataracts may be prevented each year.

Forging new models of natural resource governance – Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment

In this editorial by R Patrick Bixler, Matthew McKinney, and Lynn Scarlett, the authors argue that “effective solutions to today’s most pressing natural resource management challenges demand working across jurisdictional and sectoral boundaries, which requires a networked system of governance.”
